Ministering to Subcultures

They’re weird. They dress funny. They’re not like us. Can they really be Christians?

Goths, metalheads, bikers, geeks, and more are growing parts of our society and these are just the tip of the iceberg. Sure, they don’t look like your typical middle class Christian, but does that make them less a part of the kingdom?

These groups and many more are considered Subcultures or, better defined, a distinct group within a culture displaying unique identifying characteristics. Any group of people can be defined in this way. Technically, Christians are a subculture within American culture.

Common and growing subcultures include (although there are many, many more too numerous to list):

  • Bikers
  • Goth
  • Metalheads
  • Punk
  • Geeks/Nerds
  • Hip-Hop
  • Veterans/Military
  • Police/Firefighters
  • Immigrants

This is by no means an all inclusive list. KMMG, the subculture ministry group that Jesus’ Outsider belongs to, manages a Facebook group with over well over 1000 members reaching a broad range of these groups, far more than listed above. The need is huge.

Divided We Fall

The enemy loves to divided us. If he can keep us from working together, he wins. He has no fear of a divided church.

Subculture groups find varying levels of acceptance within the church. Some, even though welcomed, still feel isolated because the church doesn’t really understand who they are and how they fit. Some carry pain that many congregations are ill equipped to handle.

Many of them find rejection completely by huge sections of the Body. Their taste in clothes, music, and interests cast them in a light that can be challenging to the preconceived notions of what a Christian should look like. This should never be the case in the Church of Jesus Christ.

United We Stand

In His prayer recorded in John 17, Jesus prayed for our unity. In fact, He prayed that we would be one just and He and The Father are one. If our Lord believed this was important, shouldn’t we?

These walls between us are artificial. Musical taste, clothing, interests, and other false barriers should not exist in the Body of Christ. Satan fears a united, powerful church. If we don’t accept all parts, can we truly be united and stand against the enemy in these dark days? Can we say that we are reaching the lost?

Imagine how the world would be shaken if we dropped all these walls and worked together to build His Kingdom! How many people could be set free from sin by the Gospel? How much more power would we have?

Be Part of The Solution!

We can help you reach the hurting and the lost in these various subcultures and connect with Christ followers in them. Our team can teach you about the needs of many of these groups and general principles to connect with any of them.

Heal the wounds. Break down walls. Be all the church of Jesus Christ is meant to be.

Be In Christ But Out of The Box!

Ultimately, it’s all about preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone and building His Kingdom. Together, we can all fulfill the Great Commission far better than we can apart.
